The Government’s review of the rules around open-top bus hops and open cash register systems is due to be released next week. The Department for Transport (DfT) is keen to progress using the decade-old models, which was won in a tender in 2016 by Australian firm Bell won the tender, not only for the country’s top-selling bus brand, Arrival but also for their own buses.

Irish road bus and coach maker Wexford Motor is developing new vans, to be used within the conditions of the deal with Bell. But when the DTA will have to look to the proposed solutions in terms of levels of funding, said to be worth €60 million to the DTA, is to be seen.

Public sector spending is already forecast to come in towards its entire target of €150 billion or more for the 2021/22 financial year. There have been estimates of around €1.5bn on roads maintenance for the 2021/22 year. What we can expect

The Department for Transport (DfT) said last Friday that the review of the rules will focus on the social and physical values of the vehicles. The intention will be to get the bus companies up to scratch to launch potentially traveling routes within the coming season.

It said that there would be “no immediate change” to the ongoing pre-existing sale or use of buses in the road and even the national rail network. There will be no need to look to purchase new buses. Further updates on the way the area develops on the issue of cranes for light aviation will come out in 2021.

The 20th Century Apartments, which has been in existence for longer, is investigating plans to go ahead with new development, despite being taxed under the Local Infrastructure Property Tax scheme. The scheme is popularly known as LIPT.

Davie Flaherty reports on changes to the law

The Irish Times reports that the legislation governing the use of cranes for heavy or general aviation has been redrafted, by the Minister for Infrastructure, Projects and the Environment, who hopes to have it at his disposal by early in the coming year.

The existing development is changing the development methods codes, particularly the way the cranes are employed. Under the previous use codes, the cranes were only allowed to be used for development on the ground. This new state of affairs will change those codes.

POPULATIONS are making slower declines now than at any time since 2006 and could well see “slight annual rises” in years to come, according to the TD David Cullinane. In a new piece of research on Limerick and others, he analyses the effects of Covid-19 on the elderly and other parts of society in Ireland.

“There is a point that we’ve been at where people are losing population,” said Cullinane.

“No one was getting ready for 2020 but it seems the government did,” he said.

Cullinane said what could have happened is a “hasty rush by successive governments” to dig a ready-to-build cemetery. What we have to the end of 2020 was a lot more graves than what we could have built otherwise.

“The long-term effects of these grave building activities won’t be known for at least a decade, but the short-term consequences will have profound impacts for members of society.”
