In the spring of 2015, the Lakers moved to junior college in Arizona after the university declined to fund its entire Division I budget. Once Grand Valley got the OK for postseason play and its next athletic budget in April, it brought Grand Valley State football back to its roots with a deal to play at Mesa Community College.

With a full 2017-18 athletic budget of $19.7 million, Grand Valley State has seen a significant spike in its football expenses. There is not an additional $1 million or more coming in, despite $500,000 in annual donations by former Lakers athletics director Joe Burden that have led to improved facilities.

Shifting to a junior college football team has been a gamble, but Williams also had faith in the grand scheme of things and wasn’t shy about laying down the financial roadmap that would set the school back in the right direction. The only dilemma is the Lakers could lose all the talent they invest in a current junior college team in the spring.

Grand Valley State has also made a series of small investments into former football players. When the Lakers needed coaches in the spring, Mike Perrine, a former Michigan quarterback who played with Barkley at Detroit Catholic Central and the University of Michigan, was hired to replace former Lakers coach Matt Mitchell, who resigned at the end of last season.

It might be too much to expect senior Jamal Miles, who finished his freshman season last fall, to be a consistent playmaker or to force the issue offensively. The Lakers are not as fortunate.
Williams began the process for Grand Valley State’s athletic funding. It remains to be seen if it continues to move in the right direction.
